We are pleased to announce the update and renewal of the Latin American Observatory of Indicators for Evaluation (OLIVA) section, featuring new datasets and completed project stages. Since its founding in 2018, OLIVA’s main goal has been to make visible the science published in journals indexed in Latin America and to generate evaluation indicators that help to value this production. Its starting point is the recognition that the region has a longstanding publishing tradition expressed in a threefold movement: the numerical expansion of published journals; the emergence of the first indexing and information systems (Biblat, Latindex, SciELO, and Redalyc); and its consolidation as a global reference for non-commercial open access. However, academic recognition of this output remains a challenge, since databases historically prioritized for evaluation have been those that generate their own indicators and parameters from the so-called mainstream science, such as Scopus (Elsevier) or Web of Science (Clarivate).

The first stages of the OLIVA project began in 2018 with the support and participation of CLACSO, SciELO, and Redalyc. In 2021, the OLIVA 1.0 database was completed, including nearly 1,000,000 articles published between 1909 and 2019. The open dataset is available in the CONICET Repository in collaboration with UNCuyo: https://ri.conicet.gov.ar/handle/11336/175850.
A second stage (OLIVA 2.0) was conducted between 2022 and 2024, in collaboration with Biblat and Latindex, by building a database of documents from journals common to these indexing systems and those already included in OLIVA 1. This stage allowed us to confirm the representativeness of Latindex and its importance for making Latin American journals visible, given that its Catalog 2.0 indexes 3,655 journals—many of which are not included in SciELO or Redalyc. Moreover, it now features a new search tool covering 628,701 articles. The results of this stage have been published in academic journals, and the dataset has been deposited in the CONICET Repository, accessible here: https://ri.conicet.gov.ar/handle/11336/252510.
The third stage of the project (OLIVA 3.0), currently underway, aims to enhance the visibility of all articles indexed in the Latindex Catalog 2.0 and to contribute to related initiatives. In this stage, we are collaborating with the team behind the Tool for the Enrichment of Academic Resources (HERA), developed at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata (https://hera.sedici.unlp.edu.ar/). HERA can provide the technical bridge needed to give greater visibility to production published in diamond open-access journals.
