In this line of work, we propose creating circulation indicators and leading institutional studies to generate primary information that allows the creation of a typology of universities. We start by considering that in the “periphery” knowledge of different types and formats circulates, out of the registration of the production published and harvested by mainstream databases. Especially in Latin America, a consolidated regional circuit, in open access, with more than 10.000 journals demonstrates the vitality of alternative spaces to this dominant system, and it is essential to make empirical studies that can give an account for this diversity. But besides, universities produce relevant knowledges for their community that takes place in the functions of transfer and university extension. A diversity of multi-scalar spaces, since they not only cross the national limits but also the institutions themselves. This perspective implies an inversion of the traditional working model of internationalization studies based on the harvesting of information from large databases built precisely from the mainstream, to move on observe empirically and with primary data the institutional actions and the circulation of the researchers’ production. This is how we began to develop exploratory institutional studies in 3 Argentine universities by articulating qualitative and quantitative techniques to explore the scope of the approach, the circulation indicators, and the dimensions of the analysis. The CECIC team that undertook these studies also has the active participation of the researchers Denis Baranger (UNAMisión) and Juan Piovani (UNLP; CONICET).
